On Saturday night, the crew at 4oz Fight Club celebrated Muay Thai Day the only way they know how with beer, barbeque, and some hard sparring. Jeremy, Bob and the 4oz gang wanted to celebrate this day with some close friends, so they invited fighters from other gyms here in town to come party with them at their new location. American Combative Systems, Streamline Fitness, and a few other local gyms showed up with some of their fighters ready to party down at 4oz.
This sparring session was no different than your normal sparring session at your own gym, except this time you had the opportunity to spar with new faces and with a crowd cheering you on. Everyone wore shin pads and bigger gloves to help insure no injuries would occur. Rounds were shortened to two minutes and having a good time was stressed.
For many of these fighters this was the first time to be in a cage in front of anyone else other than their training partners. Coaches were given the chance to see how their fighters would react, and how they would listen in an environment that was controlled and safe. Speaking with Bob and Jeremy they want to try to do these open sparring sessions every few months to help give local fighters a chance to safely battle, and see if fighting is for them. Bob and Jeremy both stressed how these sessions are a great chance to strengthen a tighter bond between the local gyms and to build confidence in everyone’s abilities.
This event was very well run and the fighters all enjoyed themselves. It was great to see guys eating and drinking with the same person they had just been in the cage with. I hope to see more of these events in the future as it was a great chance for the fighters and coaches to experience a fight like feeling while still safely sparring.
