What do you get when you combine live music, food and a mix of some established and some unknown MMA fighters in Houston getting together for some good old fashioned hard sparring? FUN! Well, to be more specific, family FUN Day 3, put on by 4oz Fight Club.
On January 8, 2011, the guys over at 4oz opened up their doors to the Houston MMA community for their third installment of Family Fun Day. More than 40 local fighters signed up and when all was said and done, more than 475 people showed up to enjoy the sparring.
I would try and mention every notable name in Houston MMA that was there, but to be honest, there were so many that I’m afraid I would forget some and get in trouble.
With out a doubt, the moment of the night was watching the young Shawn Blanding of Kingwood MMA climb in the cage and spar for the first time. I knew already that Shawn had very good striking, and well, let’s just say that I’ve never seen a hammer fist KO from the clinch. Talk about impressive. This is one kid I can’t wait to come of age so he can join the ranks of the Houston MMA amateurs and show the entire city what he’s got.
Another fun match was watching “G” Moriera (Team Tooke) spar with newly crowned Amateur fighter of the year, John Malbrough (Kingwood MMA).
Even our own sideline reporter Mike “The Truth” Jackson got in on the act, though he had to find a new sparring partner after landing a devastating hook that knocked his sparring partners shoulder out of socket. OK, maybe that is a bit of a stretch of “The Truth”. It wasn’t the hook that caused the shoulder injury, but it did happen. Mike was a trooper, found a new sparring partner and looked crisp as he boxed a young stud from ACS named Omar Khosravi.
Fight fans in attendance also got a glimpse of the young phenom that is Kristy Kester. She’ll be in action at the next Legacy Amateur event on February 18th. Watch out for her, she’s got some serious skills.
I hope you enjoy the pics. We’ll have some videos of the sparring session on our YouTube channel up soon and will post them here on the site as well.
