No-Gi basics...any advice.
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:00:58 PM »
Just getting started with No-Gi and really enjoying it. YEAH YEAH SHUT UP RICH AND MIKE AND THE OTHER 200 PEOPLE WHO SAID I WOULD.

ANYWAY, what advice would you give a new just starting out?

Any good videos or books to read?

I watched this and really liked it, but I've only been able to practice on the cat so I'm waiting to get into the gym and try it out.

Barry, for gi OR no-gi, the most informative book.instructional I've ever read is Saulo Ribiero's Jiu-Jitsu University. I'd definitely suggest picking it up off Amazon.

For videos and online material, I'd definitely suggect Stephen Kesting, GrappleArts, and of course the technique and philosophy section at mopthemats.com.

Here's a GREAT post on going into grappling with the right attitude - http://mopthemats.com/2009/02/24/the-way-to-train-jiu-jitsu-idealism/

Honestly, the best way to learn when you’re first starting out is going to be in a really good class…like say at 4oz…cough  8). But seriously, the books will help you more once you understand the fundamentals from hands on perspective. Once you understand the movement and how your body reacts to different situations, at that point start looking into different materials. Everyone rolls differently and a style that suits one person may not suit you. Also as a newbie, it’s all about defense, defense, defense! My favorite instructional videos/books are from Roberto Cyborg Abreu, Pablo Popovitch, Marcelo Garcia, and Eddie Bravo to name a few. Just get some mat time under your belt and you’ll be a jiu jitsu machine in no time!  :happydance

DAMN IT! :cry

I was hoping for some short cuts. I just KNEW somebody was going to tell me to put a gi on.  (actually, not the first time I've been told that, I just didn't want to listen).

Yeah, I have no idea why it is so hard to get guys to wear a gi?  I hear all this crap about oh, I am doing MMA I don't need to learn gi..what the f ever.  I heard Lex Pappas explain it best last night to a newbie..would you jump out of a plane without a parachute?  Doing this (MMA) without it is the same thing.  Not that MMA is No-Gi but you get the idea.
Also you will notice that your cardio and grip strength will go way up after some time in it and that works out nicely for No-Gi.

Also, the best thing I have learned over the years is get in bad spots and start looking for the way out so you know how not to get back there (This should be no problem at all just starting out ;D) and Tap EARLY...stuff don't heal fast when you are old :-P

there are plenty of good legit no gi instructionals out there. You don't need a a gi, but it will take you longer to recieve the desired result without it. if you are determined to do without i would look up no gi experts like eddie bravo, eric paulson, pablo papavich, and marcelo garcia...they all have different approaches to the no gi game and different looks. I like to involve as many of them as I can together to get the desired outcome. that being said I also try to train with the gi at least 2x a week.

and like renan said the more wrestling you learn the better your no gi will get. And as far as basic advice I would say looking for under hooks and overhooks instead of hand grips is the biggest difference.

10th planet JiuJitsu... Eddie Bravo's system is amazing.

Also pick up The Grappler's Handbook by Jean Jacques Machado its actually a great tool for learning fundamentals before going and applying them on the mat.
