Houston Muay Thai Council (formerly IKF thread)
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:57:19 AM »
Im surprised there are so few (apparently) kickboxing comps in houston... am I just missing that
theyre happening? Sure Mick and Legacy have stepped up and have some muay thai bouts/ events, puro
combato had the first pro muay thai card, but im surprised theres not much IKF presence.. after all
Daniel Kim (I know hes left houston now) is a top IKF guy

are there events going on that I dont know about or what?

They are not very well attended from what I understand.

yeah we wish they would have more too, i think they need to promote it better and we need more muay thai awareness in houston to get the interest up.

I am very committed to growing muay Thai but fighters have to step up. I started with 18  bouts in College station and ended up with 8 including MMA and three were Thai. For some reason muay Thai bouts drop out a lot and unless I get a bunch at the start its not worth it. I have asked the state about putting on tournament style events but Texas does not allow it for kickboxing (only boxing because its an olympic sport governed by USA boxing). We dont need the IKF what we need is to be allowed to hold tournaments and I will be the first on board to hold one and participate if it changes.

Thanks for the info, I am shocked Texas doesnt allow tournament style kickboxing events..
and that explains why I never see any here... I had just assumed it was a given they were
allowed!

For sure. I think having MT and IKF fights here is VITAL for the growth of the scene.

I'm down to do what ever to help get more MT fights here.

Ok so it seems though that the state needs to change the ruling to allow tournaments though,
anyone in the know how we go about doing that?

The best start would be to make sure more people step up to fight muay Thai when the opportunity presents itself and not drop out at the last minute because they no longer feel like fighting

certainly mick if there arent people stepping up to take the fights that are there thats a big problem

hopefully my endless cycle of rehab will end soon, when that happens I will step my geriatric backside
up to the plate!

Sadly, I think this might be the toughest obstacle to overcome.

Do I need to go ahead and schedule some time with you to get an interview?

Mick's right...

Texas doesnt need IKF, WKA, ISKA, or any of the ABC's

We need fighters stepping up and filling these events that Mick provides...

NY, PA, FL, CA, NV, AZ, NJ....are putting on some frequent shows now...TX has the talent we just need to step up and get active

If you are a Thai Boxer from TX you should encourage everyone at your gym to participate or come to these Muay Thai events or the trend is going to continue...All TX Thai Boxers will have to seek out to other states that provide them oppurtunity for matches...

I searched for a female 125 Muay Thai fight in texas about 3 months when Mick had the one in college station I flipped out an tried to get on the card but the female bout was already taken. So I had to set up a fight in florida where they wear all the gear from head to toe I didnt care as long as I got a chance to fight muay thai I study and train hard for 6 months straight 6-7 days a week and then that fight got cancelled not once but twice; So it's not just Texas who has the issue.

In July IKF is having there annual World Class Amateur Tournament in Orlando FL - I say we get a houston team together of men an women and put Houston on the map..  No doubt I will be there.
