Saturday April 23rd saw the first ever installment of WGC’s Texas State Championships, attracting some of the most talanted gladiators in our area. With well over 600 competitors the tournament held some action packed matches featuring the cream of the crop of Houston’s jiu jitsu comunity. This tournament also held one of the most entertaining absolute divisions I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing!

The no-gi division ended with Daniel “Jacare” Almeida from Nova Uniao and Octagon BJJ clashed against Jacob Sampson in a match that witnessed a mix of Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The fact that these two warriors made it to the finals was an acomplishment on its own in such a stacked division. The absolute featured talented grappler Robert Yamashita to up and comer Jacob “Jacare” Odong. The winner took home an impressive $500 for their efforts.

In the absolute gi division Arsenal BJJ’s  Carlos Diego Ferreira outscored Jorge “Macaco” Patino 4-2, defeating him by a sweep. The challenging division included Jason Soliz and Albert Hughes. Perhaps the biggest acomplishment for Ferreira was being the first man to beat “Macaco” in Texas and also being the first to score a point on the living legend.
