Written By: AJ Hoffman

Close to 400 competitors competed Saturday (July 9) at the 2011 Houston Grand Prix.

Jorge “Macaco” Patino of Gold Team Texas stepped up on less than 24 hours notice to take on Jeff Messina of Revolution Dojo in the morning’s instructor Superfight.  The match went to Macaco 4-2 on points. Macaco scored with a sweep and a takedown, while Messina was awarded his 2 points for stalling.

WEC veteran Marcus Hicks, who spent most of the day as an official, stepped up when it was time for the absolute divisions, and tore through the competition. He was awarded the championship after teammate Stephen Austin bowed out in the finals.

Overall a very successful day for Houston grapplers and another well run tournament by Elbert Hebron. Pictures (567 of ’em) can be found below. A few select videos coming soon!
