The Do’s & Dont’s Of Working Cuts

Your fighters opponent lands a huge flying knee to the head. Opening up a huge cut above his eye. You have one minute to stop the bleeding. What do you do? below is the outline for what you as a corner man/cut man needs to help your fighter fight another round.

1. Minimize use of drugs that make bleeding more likely

A.) Asprin, Advil, Motrin, and aleave (blood thinners)
B.) Steroids (make skin thinner)

2. Know your fighter

A.) Beware of prior cuts
B.) Have composure/good relationship with the fighter
C.) Understand the health and safety of your fighter
D.) Know your fighters bone structure
E.) How your fighter reacts to his own blood
F.) Do not allow fighter back into training until cut is completely healed
G.) If fighter sustained any swelling or abrasions during training address those before the fight

3. Understand anatomy of the face and the difference between arteries and veins

4. Watch the fight closely for signs of trouble that can result in a cut

A.) You don’t have to wait for blood to treat an area of concern

5. Pressure the key to stopping the bleeding

A.) Use continuous, firm pressure
B.) Time is important, begin to treat immediately
C.) Don’t get in the way of the trainer. He/She can give directions from the side while you work on the face in front
D.) Never shove a cotton swab/Q-tip deep into fighters nose it can cause more trauma
a.)Place cotton swab/Q-tip with Adrenalin Chloride into the nostril and apply pressure to the nose from the outside

6. Using the enswell

A.) Never rub swelling area
B.) Place firm pressure on top of area of swelling

7. Vaseline

A.) Focus on Brow, cheek bones, bridge of nose, lips, chin, and forehead
B.) Never use globs of Vaseline it’ll end up on the gloves and in the eyes

8. Adrenaline Chloride 1:1000

A.) Constrictor; Closes blood vessels
B.) Place medicine on a cotton swap (Q-tip) and place swap directly on cut with firm pressure

9. Avitene or thrombin

A.) Coagulant
B.) Applied after cut stops bleeding and is completely dry

10. Monsels/Monsat solution

A.) Illegal to use
B.) Causes nasty scaring and causes the skin around the cut to turn black from the solution killing the skin

11. Equipment

A.) Enswell
B.) Ice bag
C.) Cotton swap/Q-tip (never place cotton swab behind ear or in your mouth)
D.) Vaseline
E.) Gauze pads
F.) Medical gloves
G.) Adrenaline Chloride 1:1000
H.) Avitene or Thrombin (know your medicines and when to use them)
I.) Scissors
J.) Bucket (for ice)
K.) Nose bleed Plugs
L.) Towel (never use the same towel to wipe up the canvas as you use to dry the cut or wipe the fighter)
